In my personal opinion, I think they should just leave things the way they are. I'm not sure how much of a difference it will make (plain text) in the long run, but again, that's just my opinion as a civilian.

No, there is no "standardized" set of codes, only ones suggested by the APCO (The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials). In most regions, the police/fire departments use similar codes, but they can still differ somewhat, which is wh…

Well, the whole idea behind the codes originally, was less secrecy and more clarity or brevity. There would be no mistaking what a dispatcher said or less chance of something like that occurring. Sometimes it's still quicker to say a "211 Now" inste…

Well, the main reasoning behind it is interoperability. Say two neighboring police or fire departments have to work together, there is less chance of them being confused by each other's different radio codes. There are a few die hard departments lik…

This is a terrific read. I completed it on fictionpress, and recommend this to everyone. One warning though: reading this one all the way through will only leave you wanting more! Keep them coming, Bill.

Personally, I have been a big fan of police officers and firefighters since I was a kid, so I have picked up a lot on the way. I've also listened to a scanner since I was in Jr. High, so I have a pretty good ear for what the radio traffic sounds lik…

The Valley-Chapter 5

Jimmy Colton steered the old tow truck off of Kittridge onto Laurel Canyon. Chuy and Bucky rode in the cab beside him.
“ I don't know about this shit, Bucky.” he said as they approached the entrance to the supermarket parking lot.” I mean, shouldn't we wait until later? It ain't even eleven o'clock yet.”
“ Cracker, now you gonna get cold feet? “ snapped Bucky, squeezed in the middle seat.” It's too late now! “
Chuy shook his head.
“ Naw, it's cool, son. It's late enough. Parking lot's empty. We… Continue

The Valley-Chapter 4

Mossier and Bond sat at one of the hard plastic tables on the Tommy's Burger patio. They dined on hot dogs and chili fries under the flickering fluorescent lights as the evening traffic rushed past.
“ Damn, I would seriously kill for one of these things.” Bond said as her teeth snapped into her chili dog.” The hairs are probably standing up on my parents' necks right about now.”
He looked up at her as he stabbed a mound of chili fries with a plastic fork.
“ What do you mean? “
“ My parents are t… Continue

The Valley-Chapter 3

Yamata and Pepper rolled along Chandler boulevard, one of the longer thoroughfares in the San Fernando Valley. It stretched from Burbank into North Hollywood and was divided straight down the middle by a grass lined bicycle path. It was also the street where Tony Pepper had been shot on a traffic stop on the night of October 30th.
He was riding alone that night as the division was shorthanded. He'd pulled over a gray Honda for expired tags and just as he approached the driver's side window, the… Continue

THE VALLEY CHAPTER 2

15X-27 turned on to Lankershim Boulevard.
Willie Bond steered, focusing on the cars ahead of them and cursing her fate. She had been partnered with Andy Mossier for the first time since she had transferred in from Rampart Division.
Mossier was well liked amongst most of his fellow officers. A big, slightly husky 28 year old officer who was always quick with a laugh or encouraging word. He was basically a nice guy, which made Bond feel bad about disliking him.… Continue

THE VALLEY

“ They hate us.”
“ Ma'am? “
“ Of course not everyone, but a lot of folks. They will call you every name in the book. They will call you a racist. It doesn't matter that you're black, kid. It doesn't matter that I'm Mexican. You're blue now. That's all people see. They'll call you violent. They'll call you corrupt. And not just the people in the neighborhoods. It's all over the TV too, and in the movies. There is no love for the LAPD.”
“ I understand, ma'am.” Royal Clayt… Continue

I've had to re-do my thriller (same basic storyline tho). Got to keep it under 4500 words. Yeah--right. Hard to get where I'd like it to go and still be that brief. But that's the only way they'll consider using it, so I'm trying hard.

I'm sending out a query today for my children's/young adult's manuscript as well. I think this particular publisher just might be interested in it. It seems to fit their current needs. One can only hope. The other projects have to wait a bit since the thriller has to be done by the end of this month, so I'm working a mile a minute!

How's it going, Bill? I haven't been on my sites as thoroughly as I'd like to lately. Been working on a couple of projects. Have you been doing okay? Joyce

Bill, I went over to fictionpress and finished reading The Valley. That is some superior stuff. I did a search and notice you have other stuff out there, so I'm going to get into those too.

The Valley is really well written and holds your interest. I love the characters too. Is there going to be more of it because I was sorry to see it end. Joyce
