The Crime Writers Network

A killer place to make friends

I would like to ask any true crime writers out here, how do you do it? I have read a lot of books about true crimes and the authors did an absolutely amazing job. I write crime fiction myself, and frankly, I'm not sure where I'd begin if I were to try to write a true crime story.

I'm sure it's difficult, because victims cannot be interviewed and paperwork must be reviewed, and I would assume any survivors might not want to discuss something horrific that happened to them or a member of their family. A lot of conversations and so on are probably conjecture, but the ones I've read are not flat, and do not read like photocopied police reports. They are well written, solid 'stories', which detail events and emotions, and oftimes, the brutality with which man sometimes treats his fellow creatures.

How do you decide on what crime to write about, and where does your research begin? I'm really curious. Joyce
