The Crime Writers Network

A killer place to make friends

When you get an idea for a plot, do you outline it first or just write it? For stories, I don't use the outline process; I just wing it and see where it goes. For two of my current novels, I am just letting them both go wherever and it is working out very well so far. I got really stuck on my third novel project though. It's turning out to be much more complex than I had originally anticipated. I don't really want to cut any of the characters or subplotting as such, so I've begun an outline to help to keep everything straight. That's working well for this one.

Do any of you out here use outlines, and if so, how detailed are they? Some outline to death and practically write the novel in outline form first. I don't get quite that carried away because mine isn't in stone. I want to be flexible enough to make changes as I proceed if the need arises. I only use mine as a helpful guide. What about you?
