The Crime Writers Network

A killer place to make friends

A buddy of mine on another crime writers' site proposed a writers' exercise and it was fantastic to get the juices flowing again if you feel stalled out. It only takes a few minutes of your time, and it's fun and interesting, and really neat to read what others have done.

He proposed a writing exercise as follows (I will, of course, use different items). You write a scene, using a maximum of five sentences. Describe as much of the scene, the environment, characters, as you can, while incorporating the items listed below. The items are as follows:
1. A torn map of the city streets.
2. A sealed, empty envelope containing no return address, but one line typed across the middle as follows: 'To be opened in the event of my death'.
3. A dead body.
4. A bright red high heeled shoe.
5. One piece of a jigsaw puzzle.
6. A crumpled photograph of a bridge.

Let's have a go at this. It really gets the mind cranking.
