The Crime Writers Network

A killer place to make friends

It is well known in the book trade that publishers, the big ones at least very rarely publish unsolicited manuscripts from new authors. they mostly accept submissions from agents.
Why is this?
Well, agents know the type of book that publishers will publish. Most agents pitch to only a certain number of publishers with whom they have formed a good working relationship. A publisher's main criterea for publishing a book is based on risk.

Length of novel.
To fall into the novel category, number of words should be ideally between 85,000 and 100,000
Having said that though, it will cost a publisher more to publish a longer book so my advice is to go for between 82 and 85000 words.

Autthors past PUBLISHED experience.

Authors willingness to market themselves.
